Swan Family

This morning on my way to work I was able to capture a photo of the swan family. Each day I drive by the swan pond hoping to catch a glimpse of them. The swan couple built and tended a nest in the reeds at the edge of the pond last spring and I could see one swan sitting on the nest and one swan feeding in the pond. Sometime late in May I noticed both swans out in the water with little grey balls of fluff between them which was a thrilling sight. Another time I saw them gracefully crossing the pond in a straight line, the grey cygnets having grown larger. Many times I would either not see them or just catch a glimpse of white as I drove by. The three surviving cygnets are nearly full grown now and their color is starting to lighten. It has been a very special and incredible experience for me to watch the swan family grow. It has filled me with awe and wonder for nature in this place that is an industrial park and a by-pass road for an interstate highway.

Fall Leaves Quilt Progress

My fall leaves quilt is heading into the home stretch. Last night I finished thread painting the leaves into the colored band border. All that is left to do is the meandering line quilting in the last white border and then the binding. My quilt should be done before winter sets in so that it can go on my bed. This quilt was started 6 years ago and has been to quilting retreats and been a long time in the making. Here are some photos showing how I take over the dining room table to work on the machine quilting. I have a Bernina 1090 which was purchased at a Super Bowl Sunday sale 15 years ago and it still runs great. It is like wrestling an alligator to roll the quilt to get the center portions between the free motion foot and the right side of the machine, bit it can be done. I did not want to send this quilt out for professional machine quilting because I wanted the work to be totally mine. The machine quilting gloves have small rubber bumps on the palms and fingers which provide good traction and flow for moving the work under the needle as it goes up and down.

Shells

Found some old drawings of shells while looking through my media archives for old photos from out west. Isn’t it strange how you can be looking for one thing and find something else? That happens to me all the time. The shells were originally drawn in my sketchbook and then scanned into the computer. Once they were in digital form color was added. This was an experiment in combining hand and conputer techniques and was done as a study.

This quilt was inspired by Mexican Eye of God yarn weavings. It was designed in Adobe Illustrator and foundation pieced on paper patterns. It is 18 inches square and hangs on the wall in my upstairs hallway.

Painting and Drawing

Experimented with different backgrounds using acrylic paints. Most of my painting has been with watercolors so acrylics are a new experience for me. The page from my sketchbook was done out on my front porch without the benefit of my reading glasses which was a lot of fun. The first three paintings were done with acrylics and the last painting was a watercolor done previously. There is a big difference between the two and it is fun to compare them. It is a lot easier to get watercolor paint spatters off the table and floor :-)
