Journal Quilts

The dust has settled from graduation and the college quilts have all been washed and aired on the clothesline. My journal quilts project has finally begun, with the theme journey. You can see inspirational journal quilt exhibits at quiltart.com, an internet mailing list for contemporary art quilters. Journal quilts are usually the size of a regular notebook, and can express many different things. My quotation book started out as a journal page last year and ended up being trimmed down for a book cover. Here are my first two journal quilt beginnings sewn down to a muslin base. Next they will be machine quilted onto peltex and perhaps embellished after that. I have a tendency to plan things out and am working in an intuitive manner here as that can be quite freeing and leads to interesting design solutions.

Graduation

Marianne graduated from the University of Connecticut on Sunday May 10th with dual degrees in electrical engineering and mathematics. She  wore stoles with tassels for Eta Kappa Nu and Tau Beta Pi, the Electrical and Computer Engineering Honor Society and the Engineering Honor Society respectively, and an Honors Scholar Medal. She also made the front page of the UConn Daily Campus newspaper - click here to see the article. She will be entering a Ph.D. in electrical engineering program at UConn in the fall. It was a very happy Mother’s Day and we are all very proud of her!

It was dorm checkout after final exams last weekend for both Marianne and Joe so it was a busy weekend. The house is filled with stuff at the moment, there has been a lot of laundry, and they are sorting through their things. It is great to have them home for the summer! Here are some photos.

Cranberry Bog

Yesterday the rain gave way to a beautiful afternoon which led me to go for a walk around the cranberry bog. It is always very peaceful at the bog and there were frogs jumping, many different birds singing, and the advancing stages of spring. Off in the distance across the bog I saw two graceful and majestic birds in flight with huge wingspans that may have been eagles but I don’t have binoculars and was not close enough to be sure. We do have eagles in the Connecticut River valley. There were also huge trees cut down by beavers and the beaver house was tucked away in a quiet spot. My photos from the afternoon are posted on Flickr here and the photo below is an overall view of the bog.
